So, you might have heard of the renowned Carolina Tigers, eh? You might have seen some of our games, talked to some of our players, or even read one of our posts here. In the past, I’ve talked a bit about the league, but for many of you out there, you might be asking, “Well, Cam, what do I do if I want to start my own journey in women’s tackle football?”
To that, I would say, you’re in luck.
There are so many different paths you can take when it comes to this sport, but today I’m going to walk you through a few that can help you not only understand the game better as a fan, but also get involved, stay active, and support your local community along the way.
So, with that being said…let’s get into it.
Find Your Local Team
There are a ton of women’s football teams out there, and chances are you didn’t even realize some of them are right in your own backyard.
The American Women’s Football League (AWFL) has over 30 teams this year, and you can find them by visiting the league’s website or simply looking up whether there are any teams in your state.
In fact, it doesn’t even have to be the AWFL. There are several leagues and teams out there for you to discover; you just have to take the time to look.
Get to know the players, check out their social media, and really invest in what they’re doing. Not only does it help you understand the game better, but it also gives you more insight into the culture and community behind it.
And if you can, show your support, it’s the best way to truly experience it all.
Learn the Game
This might go without saying, but it’s important to learn as much as you can about the game.
Even if you’re just watching, having a solid understanding of the rules and how it’s played allows you to enjoy it on a much deeper level. The good news is, the women’s game is played almost exactly the same, with only a few minor differences.
Being familiar with basic terms, like what a first down is, how points are scored, and the different positions on offense and defense, goes a long way. And the best part is, you can learn all of this just by watching the game or looking up the rules online.
Come to a Practice or Tryout
When I asked around about the number one piece of advice for anyone interested in playing, the answer was simple: just show up.
Come to a tryout or a practice. Coaches and players will help get you up to speed and teach you everything you need to know. Gear can be handled later, but the most important step is showing up and giving it a shot.
If you’ve been hesitant to try, or even just to watch, women’s tackle football, now is the time.
This sport has the power to change your life in so many positive ways. Whether it’s meeting new people, getting in shape, or simply finding a new passion, take that first step and give it a try.
